Jackie MartinoCountry of origin:U.S. Type of music generally:Folk, folk/rock, and pop, with tinges of jazz Status:Most recent release, Run, 1999 See also:Label site Comparisons:Her promotional materials describe her as falling somewhere between Ani DiFranco and Joni Mitchell, and I suppose that's a fair description, though I wouldn't say she sounds like either of them. I can't think of anyone I would compare her directly to, though her music sounds similar to that of a lot of people. At times the Ani DiFranco influence can definitely be felt, and at other times her music could fit quite comfortably on a Joan Armatrading album. (eperkins@surfbest.net) Covers/own material:Mostly own, some co-written songs, occasional covers General comments:See album comments below Recommended first album:Run is her debut cd Recordings:Run RunRelease info:1999--Eden Way Music, 304 Main Ave. #306, Norwalk, CT 06851--91022 14012 Availability:U.S.; see label site for more information Ecto priority:Group members:Jackie Martino--vocal, piano, synth, acoustic guitar, organ Guest artists:Jen Gallo--electric and acoustic guitars Produced by:Joe Ferry Comments:Most of the album is a little too pop-sounding for my usual tastes, but I have played it several times and enjoy it quite a bit. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes more pop- or mainstream-influenced music. There is some very nice piano playing (she plays piano and guitar), and her voice is strong and clear-sounding. There are definitely hints of more to come, particularly in the more stripped-down songs.
