Jessica WeiserCountry of origin:U.S. Type of music generally:Alternative pop Status:New release, after silence (2002) See also:Jessica Weiser's MySpace page Comparisons:Tara MacLean, Emm Gryner, Juliana Hatfield. (Neile) Covers/own material:Own lyrics, co-writes music General comments:Fun/melancholy pop with a lot of promise. The overall sound seems to owe much to Tara MacLean, Emm Gryner and Juliana Hatfield but has its own feel. Jessica Weiser has a pure, strong soprano that gets more assured and nuanced with every release, and she has a growing talent as a songwriter. (Neile) Transition epRelease info:1999—jnw0022 Availability:Unknown Ecto priority:Recommended for fans of alternative pop Group members:Jessica Weiser—vocals, guitar, piano Guest artists:Jeff White—percussion Produced by:Jeff White & Jessica Weiser Comments:This ep shows a definite growth from her first ep, both in the strength of her vocals and her maturing songwriting. Her voice has that DIY reedy sound on sustained notes like Juliana Hatfield and Mary Lou Lord have, and her songwriting seems along those lines to me, too, but I actually like her better than either of them. I like how she fits the piano-only piece in here—it's a nice mood break between the guitar pieces, and then ends with another moody piano piece (my favourite on the disc). This makes me look forward to hearing more from Jessica. (Neile) becomingRelease info:2001—riveter records Availability:Unknown Ecto priority:Recommended for Jessica Weiser fans Group members:Jessica Weiser—vocals, piano, guitar Guest artists:Lyle Koehnlein—bass Comments:This is a collection of rehearsal sessions, demos, and other previously unreleased material, and includes an interview. It has several songs unavailable elsewhere, and a lovely a cappella version of "Amazing Grace", which really showcases Jessica's vocal expressiveness. Definitely one for fans and those who want to see an artist's evolution. Her vocals here are pure, assured, and affecting; her songwriting is solid and moving. (Neile) Further info:Jessica Weiser also has a site for her professional photography. |
