Sidsel EndresenCountry of origin:Norway Type of music generally:Deep evocative ethereal and somewhat experimental, with touches of folk, jazz, and pop Status:Most recent release, One (2006) See also:Sidsel Endresen's Facebook page Comparisons:Something in the spareness of her performance reminds me of Agnes Buen Garnas, though her music is quite different Covers/own material:Own General comments:Sidsel Endresen is one of those artists who is extremely difficult to describe well. Her work is spare but has some electronic backing, some jazz elements, some folk elements, some non-mainstream-pop elements, and an experimental flavour but doesn't fall into the styles of music usually called experimental. She has a deep, haunting voice and sings music full of ripples of sound, connotation, and allusion. Beautiful, soft and sad. [Anticipates Jane Siberry's Maria.] (lissener@wwa.com) UndertowRelease info:2000—Jazzland—548 195-2 Availability:Norway and online sources Ecto priority:Highly recommended Group members:Sidsel Endresen—vocals Guest artists:Patrick Shaw Iverson—flutes, loops Produced by:Sidsel Endresen Comments:Haunting yet catchy, "undertow" describes this album well. It's deceptively simple yet catchy and drags you into its mood. There are all kinds of hints of deeper levels and melancholy hauntings, all framed by Sidsel Endresen's aching vocals. (Neile) |
