Sidsel Endresen is one of those artists who is extremely difficult to describe well. Her work is spare but has some electronic backing, some jazz elements, some folk elements, some non-mainstream-pop elements, and an experimental flavour but doesn't fall into the styles of music usually called experimental. She has a deep, haunting voice and sings music full of ripples of sound, connotation, and allusion. (Neile)

Smoky, spare, jazz-informed, siberrian; with spacious hollows and crystalline percussion. Beautiful, soft and sad. It resembles other ECM understated jazz vocal work I've heard more than the liveliness of Maria. I find this interesting and evocative, but ultimately less individual than and haunting than Undertow. Haunting yet catchy, "undertow" describes this album well. It's deceptively simple yet catchy and drags you into its mood. There are all kinds of hints of deeper levels and melancholy hauntings, all framed by Sidsel Endresen's aching vocals. (Neile)
