Jayne Sachs / Jayne Sachs Band

Country of origin:

U.S.

Type of music generally:

Alternative pop

Status:

Most recent release, Live! (2006); most recent studio release, Sutures (2005)

Comparisons:

Jayne is unique, and thus very hard to compare to other artists. However, I've heard her compared to Alanis Morissette, but without the anger. I'm not so sure about this. Perhaps her songwriting can be compared to Alanis, but her style is her own. (smolla@siscom.net)

Covers/own material:

Jayne writes all of her own songs.

General comments:

I remember the first time I saw a Jayne Sachs show in the spring of 1997. I had actually gone to the venue to see another band, Over The Rhine. Jayne opened for them, and nearly stole the show (if that's possible). The venue (Canal Street Tavern, Dayton Ohio) is known for being a great place to play, and at times, I swear you could've heard a pin drop during Jayne's performance. She was singing from the heart, and you could feel the emotion when she sang some of her more powerful songs, such as "Very Well" (about losing a loved one). Jayne mostly plays all over in Ohio, but has been known to make it to other states, such as Philadelphia and New York. She puts on a show that is not to be missed. I try to see nearly every performance here in the Dayton area, and I'm going to miss that when she hits it big. I'd be surprised if it didn't happen soon, so be sure to check her out if you get the chance. (smolla@siscom.net)

    Comments:

Incredible sophomore effort. This CD sounds fresh every time I listen to it! Her songwriting is so rich & deep, it's really tough for me to pick a "favorite" song. From her questions about life and death in "Yeah, Right", down to difficulties dealing with a dysfunctional relationship in the title track, this CD grabs your attention. There are also a couple of hidden tracks on this CD, one of which ("Queen of the Flies") has every right to be listed with the rest of them. It's a beautiful, haunting song. (smolla@siscom.net)
