Gayle CloudCountry of origin:U.S. Type of music generally:Ambient mainstream pop Status:Most recent release, Many Waters (2010) See also:Gayle Cloud's MySpace page Comparisons:Hmm...most performers of ambient pop I've heard tend to be darker, so I'm not sure who to compare her to. Her press mentions Kate Bush and Loreena Mckennitt, but in all honesty I don't hear either of them here. It also mentions Pink Martini, which seems a little more apt, though I don't know their sound well. (sophiagurley@hotmail.com) Covers/own material:Own General comments:Gayle Cloud has a rich, strong voice. Her overall sound is low-key but upbeat. It's also multi-layered and carefully produced for a full sound. (sophiagurley@hotmail.com) Recommended first album:Second Chance is the only one we've heard Recordings:
Second ChanceRelease info:2006 Availability:See Gayle Cloud's site Ecto priority:Recommended Group members:Gayle Cloud—vocals Guest artists:John Pahmer—all instruments except as noted below Produced by:John Pahmer Comments:This album has production unusual for such an overall laid-back sound, and that really helps bring the songs to life. Of course, that doesn't mean I should underestimate Gayle Cloud's lovely vocals, which are the focus point, but the well-designed sound helps highlight it in a way that makes this more than the sum of its parts. Stand-out tracks for me are the sweet "Anna's Hope" and the powerful, jazzy "Talaky." (sophiagurley@hotmail.com) Thanks to Sophia Gurley for work on this entry.
