This sound is perhaps the genesis of Emma Härdelin of Garmana's vocal style; Mari Boine's music is a little similar to this; Kirsten Bråten Berg also does some vocals like this, particularly on the Nordisk Sang disc

Based on traditional songs

General comments:

Music based on medieval songs from Norway, arranged and played by Jan Garbarek (sax, synths, perc). (Dirk.Kastens@rz.Uni-Osnabrueck.DE)

This is a project of famous jazz musician Jan Garbarek. Here he joins with singer Agnes Buen Garnås to do an album of music based on medieval Norwegian songs. These are atmospheric backgrounds with the sharp, nasal, but also beautiful sound of Agnes Buen Garnås' voice. It does have a medieval feel, and also has the sound of the wide open wintery northern spaces. Exquisite. (Neile)
