MadredeusCountry of origin:Portugal Type of music generally:Beautiful & fierce ethereal world music Status:Most recent release, Capricho Sentimental (2015) See also:Madredeus's site Comparisons:The more stripped-down side of Loreena McKennitt's music if she were Portuguese Covers/own material:Own General comments:I wanted to share my new "find" with everyone: Madredeus. A beautiful band from Portugal, one people would like if they like the "world" music of Loreena McKennitt. It's not Celtic, but it is wonderful, and the lead singer has a tremendous voice. (Matt.Bittner) Recommended first album:Antologia is a good place to start and Electronico is a fascinating take on their music. (Neile) Recordings:
AntologiaRelease info:2000—EMI (Europe)—7243 5 25945 2 6 Availability:Europe Ecto priority:Highly recommended Group members:Teresa Saigueiro—vocals Guest artists:António Vitorina de Almerida—piano Produced by:Executive Producers—Paulo Junqueiro, Maria Joao Fortes, and Verónica Paine Comments:A stunningly beautiful compilation. The acoustic instruments and Teresa Saigueiro's beautiful, angelic vocals are a lovely, powerful, yet peaceful combination. The songs have a traditional/world music feel, but are mostly written by the guitarist. (Neile) ElectronicoRelease info:2002—EMI (Europe)—07243 539895 2 1 Availability:Europe Ecto priority:Highly recommended Group members:Teresa Saigueiro—vocals Guest artists:Mixes by: Lux, Alpha, Sunday Best, Buscemi, Banzai Republic, Ralph Myerz & The Jack Herren Band, Steve Miller, Dusted, Telepopmusik, Al Johnson, David Bridie & Christian Scallan, Craig Armstrong, Manitoba Comments:The remixes maintain the spirit of Madredeus's work (especially the purity of Teresa Saigueiro) but add that extra electronic edge. A fascinating collection and collaboration. Still mostly peaceful but often danceable. (Neile) Further info:Vocalist Teresa Saigueiro released a solo disc, Obrigado in 2006 |
