Clan AlbaCountry of origin:Scotland Type of music generally:Traditional and contemporary folk Status:Only release as a group, Clan Alba (1995) See also:AllMusic's info on Clan Alba Comparisons:Dick Gaughan's solo work Covers/own material:Traditional and own General comments:This album is a kind of supergroup of Scottish contemporary/traditional musicians and singers with the best known (and guiding force of the gathering) being Dick Gaughan. Vocals trade off between the members. Their material ranges from traditional jigs and reels and songs to contemporary protest folk. The voices are strong, the songwriting is good. (Neile) Recommended first album:Clan Alba only album to date Recordings:Clan Alba (1995) Clan AlbaRelease info:1995—Clan Alba Productions—CD1 Availability:Rare and hard-to-find was only available by mail order in the U.K. Ecto priority:Recommended only for fans of contemporary and traditional folk Group members:Dick Gaughan—vocal, guitar Produced by:Dick Gaughan Comments:I should have liked this more, but I guess it goes to show how particular my tastes are in traditional folk music. This album is a kind of supergroup of Scottish traditional musicians and singers, but basically I find it uninspiring. I wanted it badly when I heard of it and heard discussion of it on a couple of celtic folk lists, but I don't love it and rarely play it. I expected something more, though I'm not sure what that more is. (Neile) |
