LoneladyCountry of origin:England Type of music generally:Eclectic post-punk alternative pop Status:Most recent release, Hinterland (2015) See also:Lonelady's site Comparisons:B-52's, Dalbello, Gang of Four, Wire Covers/own material:Own General comments:Delightfully energetic pop with a retro-80s flavour. Julie Campbell has a powerful raspy voice for this lively, dance-y sound, but can also pull off the blues-y ending track on Nerve Up gorgeously. Musically Lonelady is like B-52's in the guitar sound, like the sparseness of Wire and Gang of Four. (Neile) Recommended first album:Either, though Nerve Up has perhaps a slight edge. Recordings:
Nerve Up (2010)Release info:2010—Warp Records—WARPCD0186 Availability:Wide Ecto priority:Highly recommended Group members:Julie Campbell Guest artists:Andrew Cheetham—drums Produced by:Julie Campbell and Guy Fixsen Comments:Loved this from the first time I heard the first single, "Immaterial." While the music does harken back to post-punk 1980s pop, it's distinctively contemporary, and though there are a couple of moments that I wouldn't have been surprised to hear on a Dalbello album (including one total doppelganger moment) it feels highly individual. Lively and unforgettable. No one else is quite doing what she is right now, and I can heardly wait to hear what she does next. But most of it is just a wonderful, and I'm still very happy to hear most of it. The strong songs truly are well worth hearing. Recommended, especially if you like Nerve Up. No one else is doing what she's doing here: mining the best of '80s music and creating something edgy and alive and current from it. (Neile) |
