Comparisons:

Loreena McKennitt, Enya, Mary Black. (jbr@casetech.dk)

Capercaillie. Clannad has their own flavor, but both groups are female-fronted bands (whose lead vocalists have also released solo albums) that do traditional songs, and their own songs in both Gaelic and English. Both have released an incredible number of albums over an incredible number of years. (JoAnn Whetsell)

Covers/own material:

Own and traditional songs. Very occasional covers.

General comments:

Hmmm...Clannad is one of my favorite bands even though I don't have that many CDs by them. They have been around for quite some time. One album I have Fuaim (pronounced "Foom") dates back to '82. Enya was with them at that time. Fuaim has a mostly traditional Irish sound to it. Lovely album but much different from their more recent stuff. The later albums have a more mainstream sound that may appeal to those who shy away from the traditional. Your mileage may vary. (kcd@cray.com)

I love Clannad. During the mid-'80s I found their blend of traditional Irish folk music, quasi-New Age mood music and rock and roll to be the best of its genre. In recent years, I must grudgingly confess to finding their sound to be more and more generic. However, highlights include the brilliant Macalla, and the similarly inspired Anam. (colford@chlotrudis.org)

I was introduced to Clannad from their album Banba, so then I collected the '90s albums, then the very traditional '70s ones, and the '80s albums. Of the three stages, I probably listen to the '90s albums most, but I think their '70s stuff is probably their strongest work. The '80s albums don't do much for me. (JoAnn Whetsell)

I preferred them in the '70s and early '80s when they were much more traditional, back before they developed that "lush" sound. Oh well. It shows what I know! :) Those older albums (Clannad, Dulaman, Clannad 2, Crann Ull, Clannad In Concert) still are my favorites. (silme@ix.netcom.com)

Frankly I find most of the output from Clannad (after Clannad 2) to be too...umm...newagy and bland in general. (mcurry@io.com)

The members of Clannad are all related; in fact, "Clannad" is a word for family in Gaelic (and rather obviously related to the English word "clan"). The main group was Maire Brennan and two of her brothers, Ciaran and Pol, along with uncles Padraig and Noel. Sister Enya joined for three years around 1980. Pol dropped out around 1990. There are handful more sisters, some of whom pop up on backup vocals on Maire Brennan's albums; sister Brmdmn released a single a few years back but i never tracked it down. They are all from Donegal, which is in the far north of ireland (but part of the republic).
Maire Brennan is a quite respectable traditional irish harpist, and Clannad's superb traditional album Clannad in Concert (1978) is a major reason i picked up the harp. To this day my favorite harp piece is their arrangement of Carolan's "Planxty Burke"; mind you, that's also one of the /only/ pieces i can play ;-) anyway, Clannad's early albums were much more rooted in irish trad, were quite influential, and are highly recommended. (bossert@suddensound.com)

Recommended first album:

You may want to start with a compilation album (The Collection, PastPresent, Rogha, The Ultimate Collection, or An Diolaim. Having only PastPresent of these, I cannot recommend a first compilation album.) For lovers of traditional music, start with one of the earlier albums. For lovers of contemporary world/pop start with one of the '90s albums, particularly Anam or Lore. PastPresent may be the best way to get a feel for them as it combines their earlier, more traditional sound with the pop of their later albums. (JoAnn Whetsell)

Comments:

the album called simply Clannad is their very first release—very trad in its approach! (CAT@MAIL.KINROWAN.COM)

Clannad, the album, is one of their most traditional albums, and their first. It's lively and engrossing. Some of the songs are about love, others about the sea, emigration, pollution and war (the Battle of Clontarf, 1014, in specific.) All in all, an excellent interpretation of traditional Irish music. Most of the songs are in Gaelic. (billonline@adlerbooks.com)

Comments:

As with Clannad, most of the songs on Clannad 2 are in Gaelic. Yet even if you don't understand Gaelic, which I don't, the lyrics and music penetrate you mind is some inexplicable way, letting you feel what the songs are about. (billonline@adlerbooks.com)

I have read that Enya was in the group on this album as well as Fuaim, even though the liner notes don't reflect that. Of the early albums, this one is my favorite. I love the harp. It feels very green to me. (JoAnn Whetsell)

Comments:

Not as good as Magical Ring. (jbr@casetech.dk)

Far less traditional than their earlier albums, and more pop sounding, Sirius still retains an Irish feel. I think the song, "Something to Believe In" is one of Clannad's best. (billonline@adlerbooks.com)

The album Sirius has very powerful moments that could have been among their best, but the Los Angeles production team/session musicians lent too much of an overproduced, bombastic sound to the inherent, gentle beauty of Clannad. (colford@chlotrudis.org)

Comments:

Banba, and Maire Brennan's Maire—if I could take my favorites off each, I could make an album I truly love. As it is there are a few gems on each with quite a few duds. (jjhanson@att.net)

Maire Brennan's voice haunts me. I love it. Banba certainly isn't their strongest album, but coupled with their live show, it was worthy of inclusion in my best of the year. (And I think they're far superior to Enya.) (colford@chlotrudis.org)

If you like the song "I Will Find You", you'd probably like the rest of the album. "I Will Find You" was used in the film Last Of The Mohicans. Quite appropriate I thought. (kcd@cray.com)

Banba was the first Clannad album I heard. As such, it was definitely good enough to hook me as a fan. I always enjoy it when I listen to it, but the songs aren't quite as memorable as on some of the other albums. All in all, still a very good album. (JoAnn Whetsell)

Comments:

Finally, the new Clannad album Lore has been released in Germany. To my surprise, the greedy record company released it as a 2 CD-set. The (in my opinion absolutely superfluous) bonus CD, called Themes and Dreams, contains 5 songs that already appeared on the PastPresent best-of album, and 1 song from Banba. A few months ago they released a Themes album with soundtrack music from Clannad which also contains these songs. It's really annoying because one has to pay for the extra disk. But Lore was worth the money. It's an excellent album. Some novelties: Maire contributed three songs, 6 of the 11 songs are in Gaelic, Vinnie Colaiuta plays drums, some other musicians from Maire's solo albums appear (Ciaran seems to have recognized her talent). One of the traditional songs ("Alasdair MacColla") has already been interpreted by Capercaillie (it's the first track on Sidewaulk). The two versions are totally different. Capercaillie's version is more traditional and down to earth, while Clannad's version is slower and more complex and dense. I don't know which one I like better; they both have their appeal. "Trail of Tears" was the track that Thomas Loefke performed in his concert. (Dirk.Kastens@rz.Uni-Osnabrueck.DE)

i haven't actually heard the last couple releases from clannad, but this is a very peaceful, soothing record. it's easy to remember that Enya was once part of this group, although much of this record sticks to more standard song structures...you wouldn't file this under "new age" where Enya is often shoved...er, shelved...although it's less overtly pop/rock than, say, Macalla. i like it a lot. good to put on at the end of (or better yet, in the middle of) a stressful day. (dmw@mwmw.com)

I agree. It's a lovely album. It's been spending a fair amount of time in my CD player here at work. I've heard some complaints that people think it sounds too much like Banba, and initially I thought that, but the more I listen to it, the more I hear the distinction between the two. Even though I don't understand a word of the Gaelic lyrics, they are my favorite tracks. ;-) (kcd@cray.com)

Lore is my favorite Clannad album. And I have 11 of them. It's also an all-new material release, a Clannad rarity. (JoAnn Whetsell)

Comments:

I was glad that Clannad won best New Age album, even though Landmarks was relatively weak. (Patrick)

I've also been enjoying Landmarks quite a bit; it has a nice blend of ballads and up-tempo tunes. (Greg.Jumper@Eng.Sun.COM) Another disappointment is the new Clannad album. Another "oh, it's time to enter the studio and record a new album" Clannad album: the same sound, the same songs, no progress at all. It's not bad but there isn't any improvement in their music. If you have one you know them all. Well, still a good album but I expected more. (Dirk.Kastens@rz.Uni-Osnabrueck.DE)

Comments:

Released in 2005, this album's tracks were actually recorded in 1996. The tracks skew to their earlier, more traditional material, but with the contemporary feel with which they approached later work such as Lore. It's a winning mixture of the two. (JoAnn Whetsell)

Comments:

A really excellent album, up there with their best work. The sound is most reminiscent of albums like Magical Ring and Macalla, even occasionally their earlier more traditional work. Perhaps because it brings together the five original members of the band. It's a reunion I'm very glad for. They sound wonderful together, making music that is original and traditional, contemporary and timeless. (JoAnn Whetsell)

Further info:

"I Will Find You" (from Banba) appears on the soundtrack to the film The Last of the Mohicans. "Both Sides Now" (with Paul Young) appears on the soundtrack to the film Switch. "(The Theme From) Harry's Game" appears on the soundtrack to the film Patriot Games. The single "Christmas Angels" can be found on the charity compilation Forgotten Angels.
