Type of music generally:

Traditional and neo-traditional Russian folk

Status:

Most recent release, from east to west (2006)

See also:

CD Baby's Julia Marty page

Comparisons:

Some resemblances to other eastern European folk music, eg. a toned-down, prettier Värttinä, or more formal Scottish traditional music

Covers/own material:

Own and traditional

General comments:

Julia Marty is from Russia, and trained in classical and folk music, and this shows in her interpretations of her native Russian folk and in her own compositions. She has a voice that ranges from soft and high to rich and full to the kind of almost nasal folk of groups like Värttinä. (sophiagurley@hotmail.com)

Comments:

Though the album begins with the lively and declarative "Victory and Freedom," this is mostly an album of lovely traditional and neo-traditional Russian ballads. A review I read singled out "Natalia" for special praise, and it is indeed an especially pretty ballad, with an almost classical flavour. "mama's Fairy Tale" and the multilayered vocals on "Silken Grass," "Dark Night" and "Crescent Moon" are also lovely. "Victory and Freedom," and "Fields of Fire" have a Värttinä feel. "Dreaming of Flying" has an urgent feel, which is a pleasant complement to the more mellow tracks. Overall, a strong debut. (sophiagurley@hotmail.com)
