Jackie Martino

Country of origin:

U.S.

Type of music generally:

Folk, folk/rock, and pop, with tinges of jazz

Status:

Most recent release, Summer Sessions (2011)

See also:

CD Baby's Jackie Martino page

Comparisons:

Her promotional materials describe her as falling somewhere between Ani DiFranco and Joni Mitchell, and I suppose that's a fair description, though I wouldn't say she sounds like either of them. I can't think of anyone I would compare her directly to, though her music sounds similar to that of a lot of people. At times the Ani DiFranco influence can definitely be felt, and at other times her music could fit quite comfortably on a Joan Armatrading album. (eperkins@surfbest.net)

Covers/own material:

Mostly own, some co-written songs, occasional covers

Comments:

Most of the album is a little too pop-sounding for my usual tastes, but I have played it several times and enjoy it quite a bit. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes more pop- or mainstream-influenced music. There is some very nice piano playing (she plays piano and guitar), and her voice is strong and clear-sounding. There are definitely hints of more to come, particularly in the more stripped-down songs.
This seems to be the only release she has available now, though I also found a reference to a CD entitled what do you say? which is actually the name of one of her songs so might just be an earlier version of this album.
She has songs up at MP3.com (though with the exception of "Run," the songs that are there are not representative of what I think are her best songs). It says there her band plays often in Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts. (eperkins@surfbest.net)
