JanoCountry of origin:U.S. Type of music generally:Beautiful, fierce, contemporary folk and folk-rock Status:Most recent release: Indian Time (c. 2004) See also:Jano's site Comparisons:The closest comparison I can think of is early Ani DiFranco crossed with Melissa Etheridge. (ishara@blarg.net) Covers/own material:Own material General comments:She's grittier, musically and lyrically, than most of the other artists I listen to, but the sheer poetry and raw emotion in her lyrics have kept me coming back for more...and more.... (ishara@blarg.net) Recommended first album:Certain Things is the only one we've heard Recordings in print:
Certain ThingsRelease info:1995—Waterbug, P.O. Box 6605, Evanston, IL 60204—0021 Availability:See Jano's site Ecto priority:Recommended for contemporary folk and folk-rock fans Group members:Jano Brindisi—vocals, acoustic guitar Produced by:Jano Brindisi Comments:It wouldn't be appropriate to say I *enjoyed* this album; it's one of the most disturbing recordings I've ever heard. What sets Jano apart from other "girls with guitars and gritty voices" is not only the subject matter of her songs (e.g. the *graphic* tale of sexual abuse in "11th Commandment"), but also a certain wicked sense of humor ("Turn On My Psychopath" is her look inside the mind of a psychopathic killer), and a deep, poetic lyric (as in "Menominee Falls": "The cliffs they were chiseled like cheekbones/Rough and cold and pale"). This album grabbed me by the throat at first listen, and hasn't let go yet; "certain things" about it have brought me back for one listen after another. It's definitely a compelling addition to my list of Desert Island Discs! (ishara@blarg.net) Thanks to Marisa Wood for work on this entry.
